Holistic Systems Analysis

What the hell is that?

A business is an open-system that interacts with the environment. It must take inputs and produce an output. The business will be affected by outside factors such as suppliers, competitors or customers. It is vitally important when analysing any part of a business to consider how that sub-system relates and interacts with its connected components.

Typically all components of a business are highly interdependent, have low separability and exhibit what is known as 'Emergent Properties'. These are behaviours or occurrences that may be totally unexpected. Scientific reduction of complex systems into separate entities cannot predict how they will behave when combined. Aristotle summarised Holism with the expression "The whole is more than the sum of its parts". From this phenomenon, "Systems Thinking" has evolved which yields understanding and enables explanation of why things work as they do. This is opposed to the Machine age thinking which attempts to yield knowledge and enables description of how things work. The systems approach looks at function rather than structure and is better suited to organisational analysis.

Whilst computer systems are predictable all organisations have people working who may not react in a conventional manner. It is not uncommon for a typical user to see a new system as either requiring more effort or as a threat to their job stability. Of vital importance therefore is the involvement of staff from an early stage. They will provide useful information initially and, if enthusiastic buy-in can be achieved the chances of success will be significantly improved. Thus when management are considering deploying a new computer system to gain competitive advantage, improve efficiency, generate extra income or make cost savings the whole business must be examined as a whole. These are the principles of holistic systems analysis.
